    Surroundings Information

    The eco view

We appreciate the fact that we enjoy a unique privilege: we have the honour of hosting one of the few lodges to be permitted within a national park - an area that is otherwise exclusively dedicated to the preservation of its wilderness and wildlife. We also appreciate the support of the human community that surrounds this wilderness area, on whom we rely for the provision of staff members, guides, dancers and entertainers; and who also welcome our guests to their village and provide fresh produce for their meals. Consequently we host a number of eco-programmes, all of which are designed to support and sustain the natural and human community of which we are a part. Such programmes vary according to need, but presently they are as follows:

    • Since 1990 we have worked in cooperation with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in hosting an ambitious re-afforestation programme for Amboseli.
    • We offer subsidized medical care to the local community - particularly in relation to maternal care and child-immunization; also in relation to HIV/AIDS sensitization.
    • We create both temporary and permanent jobs for the local community. We also offer training and work-exposure programmes for school leavers
    • We encourage interface between our guests and the local villages - hosting tours and promoting the sale of handicraft items
    • We showcase Maasai dance, costume, singing and cultural craft as part of our corporate undertaking to support and sustain the cultural heritage of our nation
    • We support local orphanages and hospitals, mostly via the provision of food stuffs, but also by means of voluntary support visits by our staff

In terms of its own ecological ‘foot' print, the lodge abides by a code of responsible practice in relation to: energy conservation (inverter systems have recently been installed so as to reduce the lodge's use of diesel-fuelled generators), waste recycling (glass, plastics, ‘wet waste'), sewage disposal, air emissions, non-CFC use, pesticide-use, noise reduction and visual pollution. Wherever possible, local produce is featured on the menus.

In order to promote the overall health of their workforce, Serena has also established the Employee Wellness Programme, which aims to address the holistic health needs of not only Serena's staff, but also of the communities that surround their lodges. In essence, the programme is devoted to reducing the incidence of accident and illness in the workplace, promoting healthy lifestyles, maximizing potential, and promoting optimum quality of life.

    The Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

    Amboseli National Park

    In Kilimanjaro's kingdom

Amboseli is one of Kenya's oldest and most-visited parks. Much of its magic is derived from the fact that it is towered over by the snow-capped bulk of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at 5,896 metres above sea level is Africa's highest mountain. Comparatively compact, the park is dotted with a series of bright green swamps, in which great herds of elephants can often be seen half-submerged amongst the papyrus grasses. As renowned for its photo-opportunities as it for its large elephant population, Amboseli remains one of THE great safari destinations.

Amboseli is world-famous for its populations of large mammals, most especially elephants of which there are around 700. The swamps are a centre of activity for elephants, hippos, buffaloes and abundant water birds. The surrounding flat grasslands are home to grazing antelopes. Spotted hyenas are plentiful, as are jackals, warthogs, olive baboons and vervet monkeys.

    Family accommodation

We offer 3 family rooms, each with a private entrance, two separate bedrooms and a shared bathroom. We can also provide baby-sitting services (prior notice appreciated).

    Children's meals

All our meals are generous buffet-styled presentations with something to suit absolutely everyone. High-chairs can be provided, as can baby-friendly food. We are also delighted to offer slightly earlier children's meals (as early as 6.30 pm) - tailored to suit your children.

    Children's entertainment

The lodge offers its own swimming pool (supervised by a qualified life-guard but not suited to small children other than under parental supervision). We also offer a wide selection of board-games and books on Africa and the wilderness. Our professional nature guides also offer nightly talks and video presentations on wildlife. Added to this, we can offer:

    • Guided nature walks or bird-spotting in the grounds
    • Family game-drives in our custom-built open-sided safari vehicles, which are ideal for children
    • Family breakfasts on safari or at Observation Hill
    • Maasai dancing and cultural displays in our dedicated cultural display area
    • ‘Edutainment': learn how to do Maasai beadwork, about Maasai warrior-hood, and learn Maasai tracking for beginners
    • We can also arrange for culturally-interactive trips to local Maasai villages and/or schools

Dining at the Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

The central dining area is reached by an internal timbered bridge over a melt-water stream, and is flanked by water gardens. The walls feature hand-painted wildlife murals while the décor reflects the traditional artefacts of the Maasai people. The spacious lounge and bar feature a broad terrace and a blazing fire-pit where evening cocktails can be enjoyed.

    Breakfast and lunch

Breakfast and lunch are presented in buffet-style and feature a wide range of international choices. In typical safari style, we offer a ‘full English Breakfast' as well as European options while our lunch menus will typically include meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian options.

    Dinner

Our table d'hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are always available. The majority of our meat and dairy products, as well as our fruits and vegetables are sourced from the communities that surround the reserve.

    Theme nights

We offer three special ‘theme' nights, which as well as offering a broad range of international options also feature a central ‘theme'.

    • Pasta Night: features a range of home-made pastas and traditional Italian sauces
    • Mongolian Night: presents a fusion of oriental stir-fry, BBQs and spiced roasts
    • Kenyan Night: features such Kenyan favourites as ‘Nyama Choma' (traditionally roasted meats), ‘Sukuma' (local spinach cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and coriander), ‘Posho' (maize) and other delicious cultural specialities

Wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks

Our wine list offers a broad selection of old- and new-world wines, and local and imported beers and spirits. We also offer a wide range of soft drinks including an array of freshly-made local fruit juices. We serve only the finest Kenyan coffee and tea; we also offer a wide range of fruit and herbal infusions.

    Bush dining

We are expert in arranging breakfasts, lunches, dinners and cocktails in the bush. We have dedicated ‘bush dining' site immediately adjacent to the lodge as well as a number of panoramic sites within the park, such as ‘Observation Hill' which looks directly towards Mount Kilimanjaro. These areas are typically presented with tables, safari chairs, ‘bush bar' and a ‘bush kitchen', where a broad range of meats, poultry, fish and vegetables are cooked on-site (supplemented by fresh soups, salads and puddings from our hotel kitchens). In the evenings, ‘sun-downer' cocktails are traditionally served around a campfire and can be followed by a lamp-lit ‘bush dinner'.

    Special events

We have long experience in presenting a wide variety of special events, which can be presented by our pool, in the restaurant or in the bush. We can also offer a selection of local musicians, live bands or local traditional dancers.

    OUR ROOMS AND SUITES

Our luxury ensuite rooms are accommodated in two single-storey dedicated buildings, which lie to the right and left of the main reception and dining areas. Each tastefully-appointed room features a Maasai-inspired, hand-painted, wall fresco, king-sized bed or luxurious twins, lavish all-encompassing mosquito-curtaining, bathroom (with walk-in shower), writing/vanity unit, and private veranda. Triple rooms can be made available.
