Selous is the only Game Reserve in the area, the others are National Parks. where you cannot drive off-road and there are other restictions such as strict opening and closing hours. In Selous you can drive were you like, necessary to see the elephants up close!
Selous is also special for the many rivers that come here together. By the rivers it is easy for the animals to find food and water, so it is also easy to view them. Also, the incredible variety of the vegetation around the rivers makes it very special. But most important: where our camp is located, hunting is forbidden and strongly controled by goverment.
We are located in the “photo zone”, and the animals know and feel this. They know there are safe in this area. Aslo Selous is not so far from the Indian Ocean, lending it a friendly and mild climate, never to cold or to hot.
One of the largest faunal reserves in the world, The Selous Game Reserve is located in southern Tanzania, close the eastern coast of Africa. It was named after Sir Frederick Selous, a famous British big game hunter and early conservationist. The UNESCO designated the reserve a World Heritage Site in 1982, due its diverse wildlife and undisturbed nature.
The reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km² and has additional buffer zones. Within the reserve no permanent human habitation or structures are permitted. All (human) entry and exit is carefully controlled by the Wildlife Division of the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
Selous is unique for the number and diversity of animals that can be sighted. Elephants, hippopotami, African wild dogs, cape buffalos and crocodiles are relatively easy to find and photograph.
Selous is a Game Reserve, so it enjoys many advantages over National Parks, including more freedom to explore and no time restrictions.
Interesting places in the park include the Rufiji River, which flows into the Indian Ocean opposite Mafia Island, and the Stiegler Gorge, a canyon of 100m deep and 100m wide. Habitats include grassland, typical Acacia savanna, wetlands and extensive Miombo woodlands.
The Selous Mtemere section has permission to drive off-road with open cars, bush-walk, boat safari and tour the villages. Even on busy days it does not get crowded, and you do not have to drive very far in Selous to enjoy the diversity of the wildlife - another advantage, unique to Selous
The Selous Game Reserve offers the most authentic safari experience available in this day and age. It is the second largest game reserve in Africa, and the wildlife is abundant and accessible. The bush is home to an incredible variety of bird species, large mammals, and endangered wild dogs still roam freely in this very special part of Africa. The waters of the great Rufiji River host a huge variety of exotic fish species and abundant crocodiles and hippos.
Our game drives are tailor made according to our guests wishes, interests, preferences and time schedule. They can range from half day to full day outings, depending on your preferences and the season. Our special safari vehicles are converted 4X4 Land Cruisers, and ensure comfort, reliability and security during the game viewing activity. The entire area is teeming with wildlife, guaranteeing an memorable wildlife experience. The resident guides at the lodge are very experienced with the reserve and the surrounding areas, and are all handpicked for their knowledge and ability to provide a great interpretative experience, and have all recieved full in-house training.

Boating in SelousGame Reserve is a once in a life time experience. With a multitude of destinations, ranging from the main course of the Rufiji river to the many lateral canals and various lakes, it gives a wonderful opportunity to see up close the picturesque view of the Ox-bow lakes, beautiful birds, water based animals like Crocodile and Hippos as well as a lot of other animal species coming to the river banks to quench their thirst and cool down after warm days. Fishing is another permitted activity in Selous area as plenty of Tiger and Cat Fish are available in the various water bodies found here.
There is no better way to get up close and personal to the wild Africa than on a walking safari. Accompanied by an experienced guide, learn about the flora, fauna and all the other little things to make you understand the ways of the indigenous peoples that live and survive in the area. It is a great feeling to know that you are treading on the tracks of the wild animals that might have walked on the same path just minutes before you.
Mloka village is near our Camp, and here we will show you how local life is. The villagers are friendly and will make you very welcome. Our guide will show you how the locals live, go to school, the market and much more. You will love it. (don’t forget to bring some books, pens or sweets for the children with you)
On the departure flight, our pilot will cross over the rivers and you will see from low altitude the real beauty of Selous. You will now see the wildlife from a different perspective. This is a very special and unique experience. Afterwards, we will fly you back to Zanzibar.
Once at the lodge, you are welcome to personally arrange with the lodge’s staff other activities which are not listed above. For example visiting the local community at the nearby village of Mloka or enjoy Africa’s splendor in full by having sumptuous picnics out in the wild as well as fantastic ‘sundowners’ which is almost like a spiritual experience due the presence of conserved nature and surreal beauty that still exist around this wonderful part of the world we are fortunate to call home.
